In 1936, the rugged rowing team from the University of Washington swept past the assured leaders in this gentlemen’s sport of the day to take the gold in the Berlin Olympics.

Author Daniel James Brown, who chronicled this amazing win in his best-seller “The Boys in the Boat,” will talk about his book and sign copies at 2 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Everett Public Library.

The Husky team, underdogs for sure, were placed in the windy outside lane, while shells of the Axis powers, Germany and Italy, had the prime inside lanes even though the U.S. team had the fastest qualifying time.

Brown features the background of the team as well as the national and international political situation of the 1936 Games, which are often referred to as the “Nazi Olympics.”

“The Boys in the Boat” lists at $28.95 and copies will be for sale at the library.

The Everett Public Library is at 2702 Hoyt Ave., Everett. Go to www.epls.org for more free library events.
