The Indoor Fun Fly is among the highlights of this year’s Northwest Model Hobby Expo, which opens today at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds in Monroe.

The Indoor Fun Fly will feature monitored open flying over the entire weekend with frequency control. Indoor Fun Fly organizers plan to have at least one buddy box system available so newcomers can experience the fun of indoor flying.

Although this is an Academy of Model Aeronautics-sanctioned event and membership is a prerequisite, you can sign up for AMA membership at the event.

The annual competition part of the event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Other planned Fun Fly events include the Limbo, the 60-second Take-Off Loop and Land, the Extreme Aerobic Kaos, Free Style with Music and others still being certified and dreamed up by the Fun Fly team, according to the expo website.

Along with the Fun Fly event, visitors can watch simulated tank battles, model sailboat races, remote control cars and battling robots, which battle only on Saturday.

Vendors also offer lots to swap for.

The Northwest Model Hobby Expo hours are 2 to 8 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, 14405 179th Ave. SE, Monroe.

Tickets range from $7 to $12. Go to www.nwmodelhobbyexpo.com. For questions email event@nwmhe.com or call 866-696-4344.
