Fresh Paint also includes a Saturday morning hunt for glass floats on Jetty Island and a chance Sunday afternoon to make your own glass float at the Schack Art Center.
Take off your shoes and search the sandy shore (the tidal area) of the island’s west side for the glass floats, which were made in the Schack Art Center’s hot shop. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20.
“It’s the craziest event, like the running of the bulls, but in the sand and with shovels,” said Maren Oates of the Schack.
The glass balls, patterned after the Japanese fish net floats one used to be able to find on Pacific coast beaches, are colorful and valuable.
The hunt is free, but be prepared to pay $3 for parking at the 10th Street Marina Park where you board the Jetty Island foot ferry. And it’s always nice to tip the young people who man the ferry. The park is located off W. Marine View Drive.
Make sure you have a ferry reservation by calling 425-257-8304. Take the ferry as early as 8:30 a.m., but the beach won’t be open until the hunt starts two hours later.
Pets and alcohol are not allowed. Children must be accompanied by an adult. No overnight camping. Take only photos, leave only footprints.
If you can’t make it to the hunt or you did not find a glass ball, you can try making your own.
Stop by the Schack Art Center, 2921 Hoyt Ave., Everett, on Aug. 21 to blow a glass float with the help of one of the Schack’s regular hot shop glass artists.
The Schack will be running the workshop from noon to 5 p.m. To reserve a 20-minute time slot, go to www.schack.org/make-it-now/session/6153.
Children as young as 8 are allowed to participate.
Cost is $50 for Schack members or $60 without a membership
