What: Texas scarlet flowering quince (Chaenomeles japonica ‘Texas Scarlet’)
Flowers that are the color of fire precede its red leaves in early spring. As the season progresses, the leaves turn green and the shrub produces yellow-green fruit that is edible when cooked. The fruit is generally used in jams and jellies because it is very tart. Another option is to allow the fruit to remain on the plant for wildlife. This flowering quince is a very good option for those wanting some early spring color, as it is one of the first in bloom. A deciduous shrub, it is best planted in the background where it will not stand out in the winter.
Sun/shade: Full to part sun is required.
Size: It is a very manageable small shrub that matures at about 4 feet tall by 4 feet wide.
Find it: At full service local nurseries.
