WHAT: Madame Galen is a hybrid trumpet creeper that provides a spectacular show in the heat of summer. The large tubular flowers of this deciduous vine run from salmon red to rich gold deep in the throat.

WHY PLANT IT: The trumpet vine, or Campsis tagliabuana, begins flowering in midsummer and continues into early autumn, ending the season in a flash of brilliant golden yellow. It’s nectar is a favorite of hummingbirds.

WHERE: The vine thrives in full sun and is drought tolerant when established. It tolerates a range of soil conditions, including sandy and claylike, as long as it is well drained. Occasional summer watering will encourage more blooms.

SIZE: Place this vine on a sturdy structure as it will become quite heavy as it ages. It can reach 20 feet long. When it reaches the size you would like, prune vigorous growth back to two or three buds from the main stem every year in the winter.

Avoid pruning in summer when the new flower buds are forming.
