WHAT: Hakonechloa macra Aureola is also known as golden Japanese forest grass. Its long leaves move gracefully in the wind, and its coloration is a bright spot in any garden.
Used in multiples, it is a stunning addition to a pathway or front-of-the-border repetitive planting.
SUN OR SHADE: Full sun is necessary to achieve the maximum golden color, but it will tolerate partial shade, where it develops a sharp contrast between the green and yellow coloration.
SIZE: This grass grows to 3 feet in approximately three years.
SEE IT: At the Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett, or take a virtual tour of the gardens at www.evergreenarboretum.com.
