EvCC student earns county service award

Everett Community College Youth Re-Engagement student Samantha Scace has been recognized with the “We Value Kids” award from the Snohomish County Children’s Commission.

Scace, who lives in Sultan, enrolled in the Youth Re-Engagement Program in 2010 as a single mother of a 2-month-old daughter.

She is earning her high school diploma and her associate’s degree and plans to graduate in spring 2013.

Then she plans to continue working toward her goal of becoming a teacher.

Scace earned 79 credits at EvCC while working two part-time jobs. She also gives back to the Youth Re-Engagement program by visiting classes of first-quarter Youth Re-Engagement students and talking to them about what it takes to make the transition from high school drop-out to college student.

Outside of school, Scace works with children as a part-time gymnastics instructor. She has worked in the past, both as a paid employee and as a volunteer, for Take the Next Step, a nonprofit community resource center in Monroe. She also volunteered her time tutoring other high schools students in math.
