50 years ago (1962)
Members of the American Red Cross Gray Ladies were bringing an early Christmas to area rest homes with the distribution of colored afghans. Presenting the afghans were Althea Hoback, Lois Reeves, Vida Dobbs, Mary Peterson and Agnus Montague. Happy recipients at Colby Manor were Ella Evans and Elizabeth Allen.
Lady MacBeth Lodge No. 251, Daughters of Scotia, met tonight in Normanna Hall. Chief Daughter Grace Davis presided over the business meeting. Officers wore informal white and a gift exchange took place.
25 years ago (1987)
More than a half-dozen cars, one potentially hazardous, of a Burlington Northern freight train derailed here late last night. It occurred near Pacific Avenue on tracks a few blocks east of Broadway. A suggested evacuation, that covered an approximate quarter-mile radius between Broadway and the river, took place.
Voices and cider cups and spirits in general were taking place in Gold Bar for what was expected to be the annual lighting of civic Christmas tree in the public park near the center of town. Dix McDaniel, semi-official voice of a group that nurtured the idea, said it was a wonderful cooperative community effort.
