50 years ago (1962)

Names in Cary Rice’s Everett High’s Seagulls column included Jackie Berube, JoAnn Dutton, Judy Gorbutt, Cathy Weeks, Lois Brady, Marg Wood, Kelley Morris, Gary Haynes, Steve Pancoast, Dave “Milt” Hall, B.G. Barker, Chuck Dempsey and Bill Johnston.

Among the many school patrols on duty this fall were Susan Sandum, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jewell Sandum, 2606 Virginia Ave., and Mark Miller, son of Mrs. Lois Miller, 2524 State St. The two 11-year-olds attended Everett’s Monroe School.

25 years ago (1987)

A Monroe dairy farmer who began milking cows at the age of 5 earned his fourth championship in the Evergreen State Fair hand-milking contest. Don Steffen, who was born on his family farm 64 years ago, collected a total of 9.9 pounds of milk in 45-second rounds at each of two cows.

Tomorrow was Labor Day and folks were advised to plan a leisurely day because they wouldn’t able to take care of much business, other than shopping. Many major retail stores would be open, but banks, libraries, schools, governmental offices and many businesses would be closed.
