50 years ago (1962)
Principal Sid Douglas of Lowell School poured coffee for the honored guests of the school staff yesterday. Veteran teachers Lena Miller and Mary Ford retired at the end of the school year. Miller was an avid birdwatcher. Ford, who had also taught at Jefferson, was a rock and gem collector.
Last year Jack de Kubber led Arlington High School’s basketball team through its final season as a Cascade Class A member by winning the conference championship for the second straight year. Next year he would direct the Snohomish Panthers team.
25 years ago (1987)
It wouldn’t make anybody forget Michael Jackson, but the Snohomish County PUD had a music video that sent a clear message to the federal Bonneville Power Administration: Beat it! More than 50 commissioners, employees and ratepayers gathered in a windy, rain-swept lot to film a multi-media protest about rates.
Monroe’s library and city council were back home today. For the past seven months the library had occupied the council chambers at city hall while the library was being remodeled and expanded. During this time council meetings were conducted at school headquarters across town.
