Closure of the Snohomish County Extension Service effective June 30 was announced by county commissioners and Washington State University administrators. Commission Chairman Ed McCollum said in order for it to reopen, divergent groups needed to come together.
Everett High School set a Northwest relay record in an event in which it had seldom placed during 26 previous meets at Sedro-Woolley: the distance medley. Steve Pancoast, junior quarter-miler; Jon Foreman, junior 220 sprinter; Nick Thomle, junior half-miler; and sophomore Dave Ronning, running the three-quarter-mile anchor lap, were clocked at 6:32.8.
25 years ago (1987)
Everett radio station KRKO won first place in the cooperation awards given by The Associated Press broadcasters contest in Washington for its single-story contribution covering flooding in November. The stories were contributed by Dennis Shannon, now at KBRO, Bremerton.
Motorists might be allowed to boost their speed to 65 mph on some stretches of Washington interstates by next week. The Transportation Commission scheduled a meeting today to hear testimony on raising the speed limit, made possible by federal highway legislation earlier this year.
