50 years ago (1962)
Gordon Taylor, chairman of the Boy Scouts Committee of Everett Kiwanis Club, presented a check to David O. Beck, president of Evergreen Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Looking on was Clark Salisbury, president of Kiwanis.
Ground was broken today at 36th Street and Colby Avenue in Everett for a new $300,000 First Methodist Church. The Rev. Harold Williams was pastor. The new edifice, to be completed by next Easter, would have facilities for 350 persons. The congregation would be leaving its building at Broadway and Wall Street, built in 1903.
25 years ago (1987)
Michael Jackson of the Seattle Seahawks was an instant hit as guest conductor of the Everett Symphony at the orchestra’s sold-out fundraising gala at Everett Pacific Hotel. Regular conductor Paul Cobbs indicated he would not be attending the Seahawks’ training camp.
John Garner, Marysville city supervisor, said the proposed mall downtown would be a shot in the arm economically, but that some historical buildings would be lost. One was a 1906 building where brothers Dominic and John Soriano operated a pasta shop and restaurant. Another dated from the 1920s where Dick Peterson operated a real estate and insurance business.
