The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival is under way and fields of tulips should be popping this weekend.
Take the family and view this spectacle of color in a driving tour that encompasses a 15-mile triangle bordered by Highway 20, the Skagit River and the Swinomish Channel.
If you’re tired of being cooped up in the car, take in one of a variety of events and activities scheduled throughout the month.
Events this weekend include:
A visit to Tulip Town: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 15002 Bradshaw Road, Mount Vernon. Professional kite fliers fly kites each weekend or you can ride the old Blue Trolley to tour the fields. Rides run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily; $2 for adults, $1 for kids.
Tulip Run: 9:30 a.m. April 6, Skagit Regional Airport, 15400 Airport Drive, Burlington. This scenic 2- or 5-mile course is flat and fast on gravel-packed trails. It’s free for age 14 and under and 70 and older. Day of race registration fees: with shirt (if available), $33; without shirt, $22; shirt only (if available), $13. Information and registration at www.tuliprun.com or call 360-540-1611.
Woodfest: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sedro-Woolley High School, 1235 Third St., Sedro-Woolley. Events include chain saw carving demonstrations, professional woodcraft vendors, student competitions, silent auction, a wood carving raffle and treats for sale.
World Canine Freestyle Competition: 10 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday at Country Classic Kennels, 9332 99th Ave. NE, Arlington. The Emerald City K-9 Freestyle Dancers hold the annual World Canine Freestyle Competition.
Dancing dogs and their rhythmic handlers from Canada, Oregon and Washington will vie for prizes.
You can see dogs and their handlers waltzing, or getting funky with “Achy Breaky Heart” or doing a slow dance number to “Hey Big Spender.”
Admission is $3 general, free for children 6 and under. Only dogs who are registered in the competition are allowed in the building. For more information, call Carolyn Money at 360-406-4078.
