Squirrel Butter brings its funky tunes to Everett

You can get lots of diverse items at Pike Place Market, from sushi to earrings. You can also enjoy some Squirrel Butter.

And on Sunday, you can savor Squirrel Butter right here in Everett.

This funky musical duo will present a free concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at the auditorium of the Everett Public Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave., Everett.

This is the last concert of the spring series put on by the Pacific Northwest Folklore Society.

Squirrel Butter combines old-time tunes, country blues and funky hokum songs with an Appalachian influence and a jug band flavor.

Charlie Beck is on banjo and guitar mostly but he plays other instruments as well.

Charmaine Slaven plays guitar and performs certain choreography called buckdancing, which she does while still strumming the strings.

Slaven is also a square dance caller.

Their style has been described as true, raw and authentic.

Squirrel Butter performs often at Pike Place Market but they also play locally at concerts and jams and help organize Seattle’s old-time music scene.
