STANWOOD — John and Ronda Russell met as theater majors in college.
The stage is still in their blood, but now it’s about volunteering to help with local community and high school productions, including the current production of the rock-and-roll musical “Grease” at Stanwood High School.
Their daughters are in the show, John Russell is the house manager and Ronda Russell helps with costumes, just as she did for Arlington High’s recent musical production.
“The kids are a doing a great job with ‘Grease.’ It opened last weekend to full houses and everybody seems to really enjoy it,” John Russell said. “It’s the stage production of the musical and not the movie, but all the songs are the same and that’s what attracts our local audiences.”
With the production, it’s 1959 in Stanwood. The Burger Palace Boys and the Pink Ladies are eager to see who wins the hula hoop contest.
Director Ken Sims, musical director Eric Ronning and student choreographer Natasha Bennett have a cast of 40 students who enthusiastically perform the rollicking vocals and dances, Russell said.
The cast includes seniors Carlie Watson and Isaiah Bankson in the lead roles of Sandy and Danny.
The Burger Palace Boys are played by senior Cameron Waters as Kenickie, junior Stuart Towne as Sonny, sophomore Davis Crouch as Roger and freshman Turner Williams as Doody.
They mix wits and dance moves with the Pink Ladies led by junior Savanna Woods as Rizzo, senior Elizabeth Russell as Marty, senior Scarlette Abuhl as Frenchy and junior Selena Tibert as Jan.
Spotlighted roles include seniors Nic Jensen as Teen Angel, Chandler Agsunod as Johnny Casino, Kelly O’Heron as D.J. Vince Fontaine, Sam Tichota as Miss Lynch, and juniors Marissa Norman as Patty Simcox, Colton Germick as Eugene and Natasha Bennett as ChaCha La Gregorio.
