11-year sentence for 1988 Portland slaying

PORTLAND, Ore. — A 1988 cold case homicide in Portland was resolved Monday when a man made a plea bargain with prosecutors and admitted there was enough evidence to convict him of manslaughter.

The 43-year-old Michael Garrett was given an 11-year prison sentence for the death of 30-year-old Loretha Williams. She was stabbed and strangled during a robbery 25 years ago.

The Oregonian reported that the case went cold until 2008 when DNA evidence linked Garrett to the scene. Defense lawyers said the evidence could have been contaminated. That led to the plea bargain.

Garrett was convicted of attempted murder in 1990 for beating another woman during a robbery.
