3 candidates vie to replace Liias in 21st District

Democratic State Rep. Marko Liias remains the only candidate for appointment to fill the remainder of the 21st District State Senate seat left vacant by the retirement of longtime Democratic Sen. Paull Shin.

But the number of candidates to replace Liias in the House of Representatives has grown to three.

The newest candidate is Edmonds School Board President Susan Phillips. She joins longtime Democratic activist Darrell Chapman, a retired official of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, and Everett School Counselor Lillian Ortiz-Self, a member of the governor’s commission on Hispanic Affairs.

The first step in filling the Senate seat is for the Democratic precinct committee officers in the District to nominate three candidates to submit to the Snohomish County Council, which has 60 days to appoint someone from the list of Democratic nominees. Otherwise, Democratic Gov. Jay Inslee must pick one of the three.

District Democratic PCOs will meet Saturday, Jan. 18, to nominate Liias and two token candidates. They also will nominate three candidates to replace Liias.

The County Council will meet Tuesday, Jan. 21, to appoint a successor to Shin in the Senate, but, even if the four Democrats and one Republican on the Council appoint Liias that day, they may delay appointment of his successor.

The 21st District includes most of Edmonds, unincorporated areas north of Edmonds and Lynnwood, all of Mukilteo and part of south Everett.
