A light snow falls early Monday as Katherine Runyon carries her single scull down to the water at the Lake Stevens city boat launch. It was cold, in the low 30s, yet not as cold as it had been on some recent clear mornings, said Runyon, who is president of North Cascades Crew, and lives in Lake Stevens. Runyon wears plenty of layers, she says, which peel off surprisingly quickly while working out in the shell.
