Unit to honor victims of Holocaust
The 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, a U.S. Army Reserve unit headquartered in Marysville, plans to observe Holocaust Day of Remembrance during a presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday at 13613 40th Ave. NE. Speaking will be Leo Hymas, who as a 19-year-old infantryman in World War II was one of the U.S soldiers who participated in the liberation of Buchenwald, a Nazi concentration camp. The public is invited to attend.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Tyler G. Fosheim, a 2000 graduate of Cascade High School and son of Gene Fosheim of Everett, plans to compete in the army’s elite Best Ranger Competition beginning Saturday at Fort Benning, Ga. In 2012, Fosheim and his teammate finished 11th in a field of 49 other two-man Army Ranger teams, all decathlon-caliber soldier-athletes. People can watch the three-day competition live online at www.bestrangercompetition.com. Fosheim served with a Fort Lewis Stryker brigade in Iraq in 2003 and 2004. He was stationed in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010. He is a Purple Heart recipient. He and his wife have four daughters. This will be his final competition, Gene Fosheim said.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Erik Kalanquin of Lynnwood has been selected for an international training mission with the Moroccan Air Force this month.
Army Pvt. Daniel J. Aiton has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Aiton is the son of Martina Aiton of Grand Junction, Colo. He is a 2011 graduate of Arlington High School.
Army Reserve Pvt. Matthew L. Alexander graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. Alexander is the son of Karla Alexander of Lake Stevens. He is a 2009 graduate of Lakewood High School.
Edmonds portrait artist and combat veteran Mike Reagan plans to talk about his work for the Fallen Heroes Foundation at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Third Place Books, 17171 Bothell Way NE in Lake Forest Park. The Foundation, which he created 10 years ago, gives hand-drawn portraits to the families of those who died fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Fallen Heroes Project has presented more than 3,300 portraits. The presentation is sponsored by the Edmonds Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870, where Reagan is a member.
