EVERETT — Snohomish County employees and the regional branch of the YWCA have planned an event billed as a “Stand Against Racism” for Friday at the county campus.
The hour-long program begins at noon at 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.
The county last year became one of the first governments in Washington to join the YWCA’s effort, when it pledged to fight racism while promoting inclusion and diversity.
“The Stand is not only intended to raise awareness of the issues of racism but to affect real change in the lives of family, friends and co-workers through a process that identifies and eradicates the barriers that divide us and perpetuates racism and other forms of oppression,” said Mary Anne Dillon, the YWCA’s Snohomish County senior regional director.
The YWCA’s describes its Stand Against Racism as a way to empower women and to promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity. More than 260,000 people participated last year.
Friday’s county event includes reading a joint resolution passed by County Executive Aaron Reardon and the County Council. It reaffirms a 1999 resolution from the county’s Diversity Council, an advisory council representing the employees of Snohomish County.
Racism may include personal attacks of any kind: violence, written or verbal threats, insults, graffiti, and other forms of vandalism.
