ARLINGTON — The Arlington Community Food Bank is asking those who wish to continue participating in A Simple Gesture, a new food donation program here, to get in touch.
The program started in January in Arlington. Other local food banks also have A Simple Gesture, including Marysville and Stanwood. The idea is to make donating to the food bank easy by having volunteers pick up green bags full of nonperishable items from donors’ doorsteps, or at businesses that offer to be drop-off points.
More than 2,200 pounds of food have been donated through Arlington’s program. More than 100 of the reusable green donation bags have been distributed in the community.
However, the food bank likely will have to change the program, according to a news release sent Friday. The volunteer who started it stepped down, and the scheduled pick-up for Saturday was canceled.
“The food bank wants to continue to grow this program, but may have to modify the process due to limited volunteer resources,” according to the release. “The board of directors is having discussions on how to make it easy for donors but be less labor intensive for the food bank.”
In the meantime, donations are accepted at Fitness Evolution on 172nd Street NE, S&S Roofing on S. West Avenue, or the Grocery Outlet on Burke Avenue. Bags also can be dropped off at the food bank from noon to 1 p.m. Monday or Friday, or 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The food bank is at 19118 63rd Ave. NE.
It is unclear if doorstep pick-up will resume. Donors can email their contact information to acfbwa@gmail.com or call 360-435-1631.
