Sultan: Park land gets makeover

Riverfront land that attracted the ire of Snohomish County code officials for junkyard conditions and makeshift shacks in years past is well on its way to a new identity as a public park, including a new name.

On Wednesday, the Snohomish County Council voted 4-0 to rechristen the former Skyview Tracts property as Steelhead County Park. People also had been calling the area Fishermen’s Park.

The new name was one of four that the Sultan community submitted to the county Parks Advisory Board earlier this year.

The county, for several years, has been buying up flood-prone recreational lots near the Skykomish River for use as a future county park. The county now owns almost all of the more than 100 lots in the area.
