SEATTLE — Seattle police say a 19-year-old man recently released from prison pulled a gun on a for-hire driver in West Seattle in a violent robbery attempt. The driver pulled out his own gun. Both men fired and both were wounded.
Police said Thursday that Juan Carlos Garcia-Mendez was booked into jail for investigation of first-degree assault and a Corrections Department violation after treatment for gunshot wounds to the hand and hip. His bail was set at $1 million.
The 27-year-old driver was hit several times in the chest in Monday night’s gunfire and was rushed to Harborview Medical Center. Police did not identify him. They say he was attacked as he stepped out of his car to smoke a cigarette. The victim had a concealed weapon permit.
Detectives pieced together what happened with the aid of surveillance video.
