SNOHOMISH — A benefit concert and silent auction to support a music scholarship program is 7 p.m. Saturday in the Snohomish High School Performing Arts Center, 1316 Fifth St.

Doors open at 6 p.m. for the silent auction, with the concert beginning at 7 p.m.

The event is called “With a Voice of Singing: From Stage To Cinema.” It will support the Patrick Castro Excellence in Vocal Music Award. Castro, a retired teacher, taught choral music at Snohomish High School for 22 years, but wanted to continue helping young people pursue vocal music studies in college.

The award began with graduating seniors from Snohomish High, and this year, seniors from Glacier Peak High School also will be eligible. The scholarship is $1,500 a year, renewable for a total of four years.

The cast will feature opera tenor Robert McPherson, who has sung in many of the world’s great venues, including the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the Polish National Opera and the New Israeli Opera. He has also sung with the Seattle Symphony.

“We are very excited to have someone of Robert’s vocal stature on our program,” Castro said.

“All of these musicians are first rate,” he added. “They are all stars in their own right.”
