Bicyclist in fundraiser struck, killed by car

ARLINGTON — A teen bicyclist was hit and killed Sunday morning during a fundraising bike ride passing through Arlington.

The incident happened about 9:20 a.m. near the intersection of Smokey Point Boulevard and 204th Street NE, said Arlington city spokeswoman Kristin Banfield.

A boy, a 17-year-old from Victoria, B.C., was riding his bike with his mother, his uncle and about 3,000 other bicyclists in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. The identity of the boy has not been released.

The biking group was southbound on Smokey Point Boulevard and about to turn east onto 204th Street to ride up to the Centennial Trail, Banfield said.

Police said the teen was trying to get ahead of the group, but when he passed, he fell into the oncoming northbound lane. A 50-year-old Snohomish County woman, driving home from church, was traveling under the speed limit, but was unable to stop. Her vehicle hit the teen head-on. The woman had no signs of impairment and she stayed to answer questions from the Arlington Police and State Patrol personnel investigating the accident, Banfield said.

Arlington Fire Station 48 crews worked for 40 minutes to try to save the teen’s life, Banfield said
