MARYSVILLE — A blind rapper on the lam from the law says he didn’t rob a woman or chop off a chunk of her hair.
“I got no reason to rob someone. I’ve been well off. I mean, these are just petty crimes. That’s not what I’m about,” said the man, who called The Herald on Monday and identified himself as Mac Wayne.
Mac Wayne’s real name is Wayne Frisby.
There is a $250,000 warrant for Frisby’s arrest.
A judge signed the warrant Friday after prosecutors charged Frisby with first-degree robbery and drug possession in connection with a bizarre robbery last month. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Chris Dickinson told the judge that Frisby had fled the area and may be in California or headed to Las Vegas.
He also told the judge that Frisby is under investigation for a shooting and possible ties to a group of people connected to the stabbing death of a Marysville man. There is reason to believe he won’t show up for his court hearings, Dickinson wrote.
The man who claimed to be Mac Wayne told The Herald on Monday that he was aware of being wanted by law enforcement. He said he was working on getting the money together to hire an attorney to “squash” the warrant. He said he’d just gotten a record deal before leaving town.
“Wouldn’t ya know it?” the man said.
Frisby describes himself as “the undisputed Ray Charles of rap, 100 percent blind and 100 percent raw.”
The rapper advertises that “a gunshot to the head took his sight and in the same instant gave him the ability to see whole songs in his mind.”
The man who called the newsroom was able to quickly provide accurate details about Frisby that haven’t been widely published. He said that he wants people to know he is innocent of the allegations against him.
Prosecutors have accused Frisby, 28, of robbing a woman of her car keys. They also allege that he cut off a handful of her hair and threatened to stab her if she didn’t comply with his demands.
The woman told police she had parked her car and met up with an Arlington woman. They were headed to another location when the Arlington woman stopped her car. Prosecutors allege that Frisby opened the passenger door and robbed the woman.
She said he threatened to kill her if she didn’t hand over her keys. He also cut off part of her hair, court papers said.
Frisby and the Arlington woman left the other woman on the side of the road, according to prosecutors. She called police. Officers located a clump of hair in the street. Police also determined that her car was missing from the parking lot.
Frisby and the Arlington woman were arrested later that night in Everett. While being booked in jail, Frisby reportedly handed over some methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin he had hidden in his clothing.
Frisby has prior drug convictions. He’d entered the drug court in 2008 after he was found with heroin. He was booted out of the program in 2009 after he tested positive for cocaine.
Prosecutors suspect that drugs likely played a part in the Feb. 13 robbery.
“Nothing’s been proved. Society is cookin’ me,” the man said Monday.
