EVERETT — A burglary suspect was arrested without injury Friday evening after holding police at bay for hours by threatening to use a grenade, according to police.
Heavily armed Everett police surrounded a house in the 3800 block of Wetmore Avenue.
A Lake Stevens man, 40, was arrested just before 10 p.m. when police entered the home and found him trying to hide in the crawlspace beneath the house, Everett police officer Aaron Snell said.
No grenade was found.
The drama began unfolding around 1:45 p.m. when a person called 911 to report someone breaking into a neighbor’s house.
“It was believed he was in the house for nefarious purposes,” Snell said.
Once officers arrived they saw a man standing outside. The suspect walked back into house and officers followed.
That’s when he told police he was carrying an explosive.
The man said he had a grenade and wasn’t afraid to use it,” Snell said.
Officers backed out and set up a perimeter around the home. A bomb squad was called to the scene.
Police moved people out of the area as a precaution. No one but the suspect was believed to be in the home.
Officers were using a loudspeaker to tell him to leave the house with his hands visible or to pick up the phone when they called.
After his arrest nearly eight hours later, the man was expected to be booked into Snohomish County Jail for invesatigation of burglary, Snell said.
