Saturday Caucus results from Democrats in two south Snohomish County legislative districts were similar to statewide results.
Democrats in the 1st and 32nd legislative districts reported turnout close to the record turnout of 2008, when then-Sen. Barack Obama was competing for the nomination with then-Sen. Hillary Clinton.
Both districts also reported that Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders led former Secretary of State Clinton in presidential-preference support by a margin close to what he held statewide.
In the 1st Legislative District, Democratic District Chairman Dan Willner reported caucus turnout nearly 20 percent higher than the 2008 turnout. District results showed Sanders leading Clinton by about the same 73 percent to 27 percent margin that he held statewide. The district includes most of Mountlake Terrace, all of Brier and Bothell, unincorporated areas of Snohomish County north and east of Bothell, and part of King County between Bothell and Kirkland.
In the 32nd Legislative District, Democratic Chairwoman Carin Chase reported caucus turnout that appeared to be 19-20 percent below the 2008 level. Sanders led Clinton by a 70.4 percent to 28.9 percent margin. The district includes Lynnwood, Woodway, south Edmonds and nearby unincorporated areas, Shoreline and part of northwest Seattle.
Democrats in the 21st Legislative District have yet to respond to requests for results. The district includes most of Edmonds, unincorporated areas north of Edmonds and Lynnwood and northeast of Lynnwood.
Each district used fewer sites for their precinct caucuses than they have in past years.
Washington Democrats estimate that attendance at the Saturday, March 26, caucuses was slightly more than 230,000 compared to 250,000 in 2008. Caucuses around the state elected delegates to move on to legislative caucuses April 17 and county conventions May 1. Delegates from those events go to the congressional district and state conventions both of which send delegates to the national Democratic presidential nominating convention.
In Snohomish County, surrogate affidavits from people who couldn’t attend precinct caucuses in person drove countywide attendance ahead of 2008. County Democratic Chairman Richard Wright noted that some of the seven legislative districts in the county had a thousand surrogate forms or more.
