SPOKANE — The Spokane City Council voted Monday night to change its animal control service.
The city will switch from SpokAnimal to the Spokane County Regional Protections Service, known as SCRAPS.
A 20-year contract worth about half a million dollars a year begins in 2014.
SpokAnimal will continue providing animal care and shelter, but will lose 60 percent of its budget and lay off more than 20 employees.
SCRAPS plans a new regional facility in Spokane Valley and could hire some of the former SpokAnimal workers.
