MOUNT ST. HELENS — Efforts to rescue a climber who fell into the crater at Mount St. Helens was suspended tonight until Tuesday.
The Skamania County sheriff’s office said the climber’s condition is unknown but he was blowing a rescue whistle. He was not identified but was said to be 50 years old.
Sheriff’s officials said a 911 cell phone call was received early this afternoon.
Undersheriff Dave Cox said a helicopter that does contract work for the U.S. Geological Survey spotted the climber on a steep slope near the bottom of the crater but was unable to pick him up because of high wind and whiteout conditions.
