Dogs bring cheer to Darrington schoolsCamano Island resident Terri Smith and Monroe resident Kathy Knox, together with their registered service dogs Nemo and Ocho, joined other members of Anacortes-based Dogs On Call, a volunteer, nonprofit of registered therapy dog teams, for a visit to Darrington Elementary School on April 7.

The dogs and their handlers greeted students and staff on their return from spring break in an effort to help lift spirits after the March 22 Oso mudslide.

This was the second such visit to Darrington schools by Dogs On Call teams, the first coming March 27.

“Even a few minutes spent with a wagging-tailed furry friend can provide relief and respite from the stress of dealing with such a tragedy, especially an ongoing one,” said Deb Hall, Dogs On Call executive director. Dubbed “supercross’ biggest fan,” Madison Hopke was selected for the gift as she battles cystic fibrosis.

Eagle Scout creates memorial mount at local parkThe Mountlake Terrace City Council recognized Eagle Scout candidate Aaron Cox at its April 7 meeting.

Aaron completed his Eagle Scout project at Matt Hirvela-Bicentennial Park at 4105 222nd St. SW by designing and building a mount for a memorial to Matt Hirvela and installing a bench and concrete pad. The Neighborhood Parks Improvement Subcommittee is creating a plaque for the memorial.

Police class yields new volunteersThe Lynnwood Police Department recently graduated more than 55 members of its latest Citizens Academy class. The annual 13-week free course familiarizes citizens with common police procedures, activities and investigative techniques.

Twenty of the participants have continued on to become volunteers on the Citizens Patrol, VIPS (Volunteers in Public Safety), and the Explorers team.

Players serve up thousands for slide reliefA volleyball serve-a-thon held April 4 in the gym of the Everett Boys and Girls Club raised $2,415 for the Cascade Valley Hospital Foundation’s fund for Oso mudslide relief efforts. Blankets and food also were donated to Helping Hands.

“It is exciting to see how many are so willing to step up and help those who are hurting,” said Candice Magbag, a local volleyball coach and one of the benefit’s organizers.

Emblem Club gets new leaderJudy Hohn was recently elected the new president of Emblem Club 523 of Everett. Emblem Club is a charitable group that formed from the Elks Club. Emblem refers to the U.S. flag. Learn more at www.emblemclub.com.

Tribes give senior center a boostThe Tulalip Tribes Charitable Fund recently gave the Lake Stevens Senior Center a donation of $5,000. The contribution will enable the center to continue to fulfill its mission of promoting the well-being of older adults in the community.

Local volunteers feted at governor’s mansionThe 10th annual Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards were recently presented to 44 honorees at the Executive Mansion, including three volunteers from Snohomish County. Statewide, volunteers were nominated for the honor by AmeriCorps, Citizen Corps and Senior Corps programs and volunteer centers across the state.

The county honorees:

Rose Johnson, of Everett, a Retired and Senior Volunteer Program member since 1997, was instrumental in starting a local Project Linus group, in addition to working with many other organizations.

Bob Malone, of Mukilteo, a volunteer with United Way of Snohomish County’s free income tax preparation program for three years, learned complex tax law and achieved IRS volunteer certification.

Amber Mehta, of Monroe, a volunteer with the Medical Reserve Corps and Citizen Corps program, helped at the Monroe cold weather shelter and the lost-person station at the fair, among other roles.

Clinic helps provide beds for childrenSt. Vincent de Paul, North Sound Council, recently announced the donation of $5,000 from The Everett Clinic Foundation to its Beds for Children Program. The funds will purchase beds for children who are otherwise sleeping on the floor in their homes. St. Vincent de Paul directs all donations it receives for specific programs into those programs.
