Mukilteo Y opens indoor skate park

The Mukilteo YMCA Indoor Skate Park opened with fanfare Dec. 21.

“Parents and community supporters came together to build a safe place for kids to skate — this didn’t exist before,” said Kristin Ebeling, Mukilteo YMCA Teen and Skate Park director.

Thanks to supporters who raised $25,000 to finance the project, the newly renovated Youth Development Center space includes a 30-foot wide mini ramp, Xbox Kinect, arcade games and more.

Gretchen Reynolds, a freshman at the University of Washington, has been skating at the Mukilteo YMCA since it opened the outdoor skate park in 2004.

She had the honors of “cutting” through the ribbon.

Edmonds Giving Trees help more than 200 kids

The city of Edmonds’ 2013 Giving Tree program collected more than 200 gifts at two locations, the Frances Anderson Center and City Hall, making the holiday season a little brighter for local families served by the Volunteers of America.

Volunteers of America of Western Washington provides food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, youth development for at-risk children, help for adults with disabilities, and many other needs-based community programs and services.

Firefighters hand out coats to kids

The Lynnwood Firefighters Local 1984 recently donated more than 50 coats for kids at local schools. In addition, 36 coats were delivered by the firefighters at a local preschool thanks to a fundraiser by 99.9 KISW.

“This is our first year doing this, and we plan to continue this great cause every year,” said firefighter Dave Matthews.
