Candy buyback helps kids, troops
Orthodonist Dr. Jason Bourne and his staff bought back 1,400 pounds of Halloween candy from children in Snohomish County.
Bourne Orthodontics, which matched $2 for every pound of candy donated, has donated $2,800 to local groups, including the Boys &Girls Clubs, YMCA and Hopelink of Shoreline.
Since its inception, the Bourne Orthodontics Halloween Candy Buy-Back Program has donated nearly 6,500 pounds of candy, and $13,000 to the community. The candy will be sent to troops serving overseas after being sorted and packaged by Mary Welsh of Arlington. Christian Ministries in Africa also plans to take some of the candy with them on the organization’s next trip to Kenya, and Heartbeat: Serving Wounded Warriors plans to put some of the candy in the Christmas stockings of 1,000 wounded servicemen and women in regional hospitals.
Soroptimists donate money to food bank
Soroptimist International of Marysville recently donated money to the Marysville Community Food Bank and Toy Store.
The club gave $1,500 to the food bank and $1,000 to the toy store to support local residents.
St. Vincent de Paul gets $3,000 grant
The North Sound Council of St. Vincent de Paul recently received a $3,000 grant from the Charis Fund for the charity’s Beds for Children Program. The program awards a twin mattress, box springs and bed frames to children who have been sleeping on couches, floors or with other family members.
The grant will help fund 19 beds, North Sound Council officials said.
Thelma Lodge aids Northwest Harvest
The Ladies of Thelma Lodge 26 of the Daughters of Norway in Everett recently collected and donated food to Northwest Harvest’s collection site at the Everett Mall.
Zonta Club of Everett honors volunteer
Zonta Club of Everett honored club member Judith Strand of Everett on Dec. 1 as the 2011 Founder’s Day recipient.
The an annual award is presented by the club to a current or former member in recognition of their service to Zonta and the community.
Strand was recognized for her years of service to Zonta as well as her years of volunteer service to many community organizations, including Christmas House, Baker Guild/Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Women’s National Book Association. Strand is the community relations director for Harbour Pointe Retirement and Assisted Living Center in Mukilteo.

Lynnwood VFW donates to troops
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1040 recently collected coffee, candy, playing cards and sundry items for shipment to the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment in Afghanistan.
VFW Post 1040 troops in Afghanistan on a regular basis and keeps in touch with them as they rotate in and out of the combat zones, post Cmdr. Martin Spani said.
Firefighters deliver to Stanwood food bank

The firefighters thank their communities for their support with this year’s holiday food drive, said Battalion Chief Christian Davis of North County Fire and EMS.
The firefighters collected 2,700 pounds of food.
