Shop: Craft fair funds scholarships

One of the biggest craft fairs in the south Everett area will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Mariner High School, 200 120th St. SW.

The 19th annual event features 90 vendors selling handcrafted wares, including a holiday and commercial items.

The annual event is organized by the Mukilteo School District’s F.U.N. Committee (Fun Unity and Networking), made up of district employees, in an effort to raise money for educational scholarships for graduating seniors in the district.

Admission is 50 cents, which also benefits the scholarship fund.

Surplus: Donate candy to troops

When Halloween and its impending sugar crash are gone, and you’re left wondering what to do with piles of leftover candy, consider donating it to Marines serving overseas.

Treats for our Troops hopes to “make the day a little sweeter for troops” with a candy drive, running Thursday through Nov. 15.

“We are encouraging people to post this to Facebook, hang flyers on community bulletin boards, offer to be a drop-off point in their area and help get the word out,” said organizer Lisa Dobbin, a former teacher at Sky Valley Education Center in Monroe.

This is the first publicly organized effort to collect candy for troops.

Last year’s impromptu effort came as Dobbin and friends pondered what to do with all their leftover Halloween candy.

After posting a request to Facebook and asking friends and family to pitch in, they ended up with 75 pounds worth of candy. The sweets were shipped to a Marine unit in Afghanistan, where a former student of Dobbin’s is deployed.

“I wanted to make sure he had lots of love from home,” she said.

The group also welcomes thank-you cards to send with candy. Drop-off locations include:

•Sweet Indulgence, 19555 U.S. 2, Monroe.

Bothell Fire Department, 10726 Beardslee Blvd.

Cedarbrook Veterinary Care, 9812 215th Ave. SE, Snohomish.
