SEATTLE — King County is making plans to replace a century-old pipe that carries sewage from north Seattle under the Lake Washington Ship Canal to the treatment plant in West Seattle on Puget Sound.

The four-foot diameter pipe known as the Fremont siphon carries as much as 220 million gallons a day. It’s one of three such siphons under the canal.

The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce reported construction on the $46 million project could start in mid-2014 and finish by the end of 2016.
