Demand met, but strike continues at Skagit County farm

BURLINGTON — While one of their demands was met, farmworkers from a Skagit County farm say Saturday they will continue their walk off through the weekend.

But the owner of Sakuma Farms told the Skagit Valley Herald he expected some of them to work Sunday.

More than 200 farmworkers walked off the job on Thursday to protest the firing of a co-worker who complained about wages. They also demanded higher pay per pound of and breaks during the work day.

One of their leaders, Ramon Torres, said Saturday workers won’t go back.

The newspaper reported that the fired worker was reinstated on Friday. But talks didn’t touch on the wage demands.

The workers want 70 cents per pound of berries picked. Their current wage is 30 cents per pound.

Farm owner Steve Sakuma said the wage increase is something the farm can’t handle financially.
