Deputy’s car heavily damaged in crash

LAKE STEVENS — The deputy was OK; his patrol car was not.

An on-duty Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputy lost control of his car early Friday on Highway 92. His vehicle left the roadway and hit a guardrail and power box, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Shari Ireton said.

The deputy did not appear to be injured, but he was evaluated at a local hospital as a precaution, Ireton said.

The crash occurred around 1:45 a.m. near 113th Avenue NE.

The north precinct deputy, who has been with the sheriff’s office since 2010, was attempting to overtake another vehicle when his car went off the road, Ireton said.

“It was not a pursuit,” she said.

According to initial reports, it appears he was speeding up in order to check on the vehicle in front of him, Ireton said.

There was minor damage to the guardrail, but the patrol car was believed to be damaged beyond the value of repairing it.

No other vehicles were involved. The incident is being investigated by the sheriff’s office, Ireton said.

In keeping with sheriff’s office policy involving patrol cars involved in crashes, there also will be an internal investigation.
