EVERETT — A neighbor and a passing driver rescued dogs from a burning home Monday afternoon.

Reports of a house fire just before 1 p.m. led firefighters to the 2200 block of Lombard Avenue, Everett Fire Marshal Glen Martinsen said. Crews could see a column of dark smoke rising from the north Everett neighborhood.

Before fire engines arrived, a neighbor and a passing motorist entered the house to make sure no one was inside. They found the dogs and got them to safety, Martinsen said.

Flames were coming from the back and from the top floor of the two-story home. No one was injured.

The house was heavily damaged, Martinsen said.

Three adults were displaced by the fire, Snohomish County Red Cross spokesman Skip DeHennis said. Red Cross volunteers responded.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
