INDEX – An anonymous donor pledged to donate $500,000 to save a mountain ridge from logging, a grassroots group of Index residents said Tuesday.
The group is scrambling to secure $1.3 million to buy about 130 acres of mature forest in Heybrook Ridge off U.S. 2 in the Skykomish Valley.
In late 2006, W.B. Foresters in Stanwood announced a plan to log the area. People in Index, a town of about 150, complained, saying that the logging would ruin the area’s scenic view and lower their property values.
The logging company has agreed to sell the ridge to the group called the Friends of Heybrook Ridge, provided the $1.3 million gets raised by June 30.
