Edmonds deals with cramped classrooms

Edmonds School Board members last week unanimously approved new attendance boundaries for five elementary schools to deal with overcrowding in the northeast corner of the district.

Martha Lake Elementary School has been near capacity, with students eating meals in classrooms and orchestra classes being held in the library because of tight quarters. Hilltop Elementary School continues to grow as well.

Hazelwood Elementary School will see the greatest impact of the changes, with its northern boundary extending to gather portions of the current Hilltop and Martha Lake areas. Small portions of Hazelwood’s attendance area will go to Cedar Way and Brier elementary schools, southeast-end schools with space to grow.

Middle and high schools are not affected by the changes.

New boundaries will take effect with the 2013-14 school year. Current students may stay at their schools if families choose. Younger siblings also can be grandfathered in to the current attendance areas. Only new students without currently enrolled siblings would be shifted to new school assignments.
