Education board considers increased gym classes

BOISE, Idaho — Idaho’s State Board of Education is scheduled to vote Thursday on statewide physical education requirements for high school students.

The Idaho Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/1dagjAN ) the proposal calls for high school graduates to have two credits of physical education, beginning in 2019. Students would also be required to take CPR training, but wouldn’t be required to pass a CPR test.

The proposals grew out of requests from the American Heart Association and Idaho Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance over concerns about obesity.

The proposal also calls for a minimum of 60 minutes of physical education a week in elementary school and 200 minutes a week in middle and junior high schools.

If the board supports the plan, it would go out for public comment before the board took final action.
