EVERETT — A grassroots effort to elect Everett City Council positions by districts is ongoing.
Organizers with the group, Everett Districts Now, plan a public forum Saturday. The group seeks a legal change that would result in five of the seven council seats being drawn from districts, instead of being at-large positions.
The forum is set for 3 to 5 p.m. at the Children’s Village at 14 E. Casino Road.
The group has been gathering signatures for some time. It plans to submit the signatures in time for the November 2018 ballot, according to a press release issued Tuesday. A website has been set up: www.DistrictsNOW.org.
The Everett City Council in July voted 5-2 against pursuing this version of districting. Enough signatures would result in the petition being placed on the ballot. The petition has drawn support from the League of Women Voters and the local chapter of the NAACP.
