EVERETT — Volunteers have a variety of opportunities to serve on city boards and commissions, including those related to local parks and history, the animal shelter, the arts, diversity, human needs and planning.
Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Feb. 8. Openings include:
The Board of Park Commissioners: Advises the City Council, mayor and Department of Parks and Recreation and other departments on parks and recreation issues.
Animal Shelter Advisory Board. Provides information on animal control, including review and modification of ordinances.
Cultural Arts Commission: Approves funding for nonprofit arts groups, presents free lectures and musical performances and is responsible for the maintenance of the city’s $2.5 million art collection. The commission has also developed the exhibition of outdoor sculptures downtown.
Diversity Advisory Board: Advises the mayor and City Council on diversity issues and activities.
Historical Commission: Advises the city on matters of history and historical preservation. The commission nominates properties to be included on the Everett Register of Historic Places, reviews state and national register nominations, reviews restoration tax benefits, provides design review in Historical Overlay Zones and publishes information about Everett heritage.
Human Needs Committee: Meets each October to review applications and award grants to nonprofit agencies offering services to Everett residents.
Planning Commission: Makes recommendations to the City Council, mayor and other city departments on the city’s broad planning goals and policies.
