EVERETT — A Snohomish County jury on Thursday convicted an Everett man of illegally growing marijuana and enlisting the help of his underage daughters to maintain the clandestine indoor garden.
Prosecutors alleged that Brian Sledge “turned his medical marijuana card into a family business.”
Sledge, 40, maintained that he and his wife had proper authorization to grow marijuana.
The couple came to the attention of authorities in 2010 after one of their children told state social workers and police that her father was growing marijuana in the basement of their home. The girl told authorities that she was “tired of always smelling like marijuana,” according to court papers.
Detectives raided the couple’s house and discovered 29 marijuana plants growing in a closet in the master bedroom. In the basement, which was reached through a trap door underneath the stairs, detectives found 38 additional plants, court papers said.
Sledge is expected to be sentenced in May.
