EVERETT — An Everett man was jailed late Friday in connection with the Aug. 13 shooting death of a man at the Bluffs Apartments in south Everett.

Jeffrey Cleator Jr., 25, was being sought for questioning in connection with the slaying of Alonzo Lopez-Gonzalez. He turned himself in to police late Friday night, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.

Cleator was accompanied by his attorney and declined to be interviewed by detectives, Goetz said. Cleator was booked for investigation of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

Meanwhile, another man arrested in connection with the death was released from jail Friday. Matalepuna “June Bug” Malu was charged in Everett District Court with first-degree murder. Prosecutors had until Friday to refile the charge in Snohomish County Superior Court or let Malu go. The charge wasn’t filed and Malu was released.

“At this point, from what I understand, he is not being charged with murder,” Goetz said.

Prosecutors last month charged Eric “Icky” Lowe, 22, with first-degree murder in connection with the case.

Lowe is accused of breaking into an apartment and beating Lopez-Gonzalez, 22. Lopez-Gonzalez was then shot in the back after either being pushed or jumping from a second-story balcony.

Police aren’t saying what role they believe Cleator had in the slaying.
