Everett school locked down after threatening gesture

EVERETT — Hawthorne Elementary School was placed into lockdown Monday after a man reportedly walked onto the campus, made his hand into the shape of a gun, pointed it at the principal and said, “Bang, bang, bang.”

The incident occurred around 8 a.m., about a half hour before school was set to begin.

A teacher noticed the man walking in a hallway without a visitor’s badge, Everett School District spokeswoman Mary Waggoner said. The teacher brought that to the attention of the school principal, who escorted the man outside the building.

The man, 18, indicated he was looking for a student.

“He got threatening and aggressive,” Waggoner said.

The principal said she felt in fear for her life and the safety of others, according to an Everett police report. She ordered a partial lockdown. Children arriving for class were allowed into the school and the doors were locked after they were inside.

A short time after the scare at Hawthorne, a woman at a home in the 2300 block of Oklahoma Avenue reported a man trying to force his way through her front door. She said that he made threats that he had a gun and would shoot her.

Police found the suspect, 18. He was hiding in the back of a truck in the 1300 block of McDougall Avenue. He was arrested for investigation of harassment and burglary and booked into the Snohomish County Jail.
