EVERETT — A two-year-old drug beef might have led to a Tuesday shooting that sent one man to the hospital and another to jail.
The shooting occurred inside a barber shop in the 12800 block of 8th Avenue W shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to court records.
The victim, who was shot twice in the leg, told a Snohomish County sheriff’s detective he had stopped by the business when he saw the suspect get out of a car with a backpack.
Both men are 26.
The victim said he was driving the suspect’s car in 2015 when he was pulled over by Mukilteo police, who found drugs inside, court papers said. When he was released the next day, the man now suspected of shooting him assumed he “snitched” and maintained that he owed him money for the confiscated drugs, the injured man told detectives.
Deputies found marks from two bullets in the floor of the barber shop.
The victim told authorities he had moved after his 2015 arrest and had been living in Missouri. He returned to Snohomish County to visit friends a few days before the shooting.
That day, he said he walked into the shop when he saw the man get out of a car. Once inside the shop, the suspect allegedly pulled a gun out of his backpack. At one point, the man who was injured said he lunged at the armed man who pulled the trigger twice. The injured man fell to the ground and the suspect fled.
The following day, the Snohomish County Violent Offenders Task Force was able to reach the suspect by phone. He agreed to turn himself in, denied the shooting and asked for an attorney when he was asked to account for his whereabouts.
He was arrested for investigation of first-degree assault and was booked into the Snohomish County Jail. His bail was set at $500,000.
An employee reportedly was in the back of the shop and didn’t see the confrontation. Two witnesses left around the time of the shooting, court papers said.
