Family of man shot by deputy holds vigil on I-5 overpass

LYNNWOOD — A man shot by a Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputy was identified by family Sunday night as they placed flowers, signs and candles on a side of the 164th Street SW I-5 overpass.

Family of Justin Gaswint, 32, quietly gathered at the scene of Saturday morning’s shooting.

Signs placed on the overpass described Gaswint as loving, caring and “a super duper uncle.” A brother of the man said the family is asking for privacy and is planning to release a statement at a later time.

There were no new updates Sunday in the shooting that occurred at 5:30 a.m. Saturday after a Snohomish County Sheriff’s deputy stopped to talk with the man. The man charged the deputy and threatened to kill him as he got out of his patrol car, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said. The two men fought and the deputy, 25, shot the man in the chest.

Gaswint was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he died.

The incident is under investigation by the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team, which is made up of major-case detectives from throughout the county and investigates officer-involved shootings.

The deputy has been with the Sheriff’s Office for more than three years and is expected to be put on paid administrative leave.

The overpass was closed for about three hours while investigators worked. Witnesses are asked to call 911 or the Everett Police Department TIP LINE at 425-257-8450.

The shooting in unincorporated Lynnwood marks the second time in a week a county deputy has killed someone in the line of duty.
