SPOKANE — Farmers have been adopting cats from a Spokane shelter to hunt mice on their farms.

Spokane’s KHQ-TV reports SpokAnimal came up with the idea after it received a $13,000 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in June to pay for spaying, neutering and rabies shot.

SpokAnimal’s executive director says the program mainly focuses on feral cats that had been trapped and had little chance of going to homes. So far about 350 sterilized cats have been adopted through the program.
