OAKLAND, Calif. — Federal accident investigators are in the San Francisco Bay area to examine the deaths of two transit workers who were struck by an out-of-service commuter train returning from a routine maintenance trip.
National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Eric Weiss said Sunday that two investigators were on site of the accident that happened Saturday on Bay Area Rapid Transit tracks in the East Bay city of Walnut Creek.
Weiss says the two -man team led by Jim Southworth, NTSB’s railroad accident investigator-in-charge, will be looking at everything leading up to the collision, from safety procedures to the track’s condition.
He says the fact that workers from BART’s two largest unions have been on strike since Friday would be part of the probe if it turns out to be relevant in terms of staffing and the experience and training of the track workers and train operators.
